Click the link. There are some really powerful photos of the ongoing destruction. El Niño may bring rains to the region this fall and winter, but that will only increase the risks of flooding and mudslides. Pick your poison, I suppose.

They are, in a perverse sort of way, and there’s a lot of science involved in fighting them. Back in the fires of 2011, a friend of mine decided to stay behind and try to protect their family’s home near Houston. They thought they were going to lose it, when a US Forest Service bulldozer showed up unannounced and dozed a firebreak around their house. They spent the night putting out hot spots, but they saved the home, thanks in large part to that dozer driver.

Wow, that’s cool.

I think it’s neat (weird wording but eh) how destructive they are but they’re almost necessary to maintain a healthy environment in some cases.
